Robert L. Thompson, Esq.

EXPERIENCE

Robert L. Thompson was admitted to practice before New Mexico State and Federal courts in 1971. After working as an attorney in civil trial practice, he was elected to serve as a judge in the Bernalillo County Metropolitan Court. Two years later, he was elected as a Second Judicial District Court judge in Albuquerque, and he served in that capacity for over twenty years, six of which he spent as the presiding civil judge. He retired from the bench in September of 2005 and became "of counsel" to Popejoy & MacKenzie PC.

As a district court judge, Robert L. Thompson handled thousands of domestic relations, juvenile, criminal and civil cases, including cases in contract, employment, government, insurance, probate, real estate and tort law. He presided over hundreds of bench and jury trials and through that experience came to appreciate the value of parties controlling the course of their own disputes through the use of mediation, arbitration and other avenues of dispute resolution.

PRACTICE AREAS

Having completed advanced mediator training through the UNM School of Law and facilitated many settlement conferences as a judge, Robert L.
